This place-based installation was made during a 3-week residency with La Wayaka Current in Chile’s Atacama Desert. Each piece is constructed out of plastics and rusted metals found in the desert. The Desert Light Catchers call attention to the transformative power and ephemerality of light and shadow in Atacama. For most of the day they lie dormant, coming alive only at sunrise and sunset. When the sun is low and streams through the plastic paneling the Desert Light Catchers are illuminated, casting abstract compositions on the sand.
